As part of ADM’s 20th Anniversary celebrations, I am incredibly honoured to have curated the first in a series of solo exhibitions featuring the outstanding @RyanSlone. Titled “Nothing Gold Can Stay: Reimagining the Ephemeral,” this exhibition runs from 3rd – 14th February 2025 at ADM, NTU Singapore.

Ryan is a designer, educator, curator, and posterist based in Arkansas, USA. His work embodies the interplay between design and activism, using posters as a tool to provoke thought, spark conversation, and challenge societal perspectives. As the founder and vice-president of the United States International Poster Biennial, he has championed the importance of poster design in shaping public discourse.

Designing for Change

Ryan’s work is deeply rooted in social advocacy poster design, where he explores speculative methodologies and constraint-led provocations. By imposing deliberate constraints on the design process, he pushes the boundaries of creativity, uncovering new ways to engage audiences with urgent social themes. His designs are more than just visuals—they are calls to action, urging us to reflect on impermanence, activism, and the role of design in shaping societal narratives.

This exhibition, “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” draws from themes of transience and change, exploring how design captures and communicates fleeting moments. From culturally significant statements to poetic visual compositions, Ryan’s posters challenge viewers to rethink the way they perceive ephemerality—not just in design but in everyday life.

An Honoured Collaboration

Curating this exhibition has been an absolute privilege. Ryan’s work resonates deeply with my own interest in design ethics, social impact, and the power of visual communication. Seeing his creative process up close and working alongside him to shape this exhibition has been an inspiring journey.

The themes of impermanence and transformation are particularly timely, reflecting not just shifts in design and culture but also broader global conversations around activism, sustainability, and digital transience. In a world where design often feels disposable, Ryan challenges us to think differently—how can design be both urgent and timeless?

A Series of Solo Exhibitions

This exhibition marks the beginning of a series of solo shows I have curated, each celebrating exceptional designers who are shaping the future of visual communication. Over the coming months, I will be showcasing the work of more incredible artists, each exploring diverse perspectives and approaches to design.
